Ivan Avhustynovych is a phlebologist whose professional journey is marked by significant achievements and innovative approaches. He is one of the pioneers of aesthetic phlebology in Ukraine, combining the treatment of varicose veins with a focus on aesthetic results. We spoke with him about his professional path, modern trends in phlebology, and the importance of a personalized approach to treating patients.

Your achievements include being listed in the Golden Book of Honor at Bogomolets National Medical University. How have these early accomplishments shaped your approach to medicine and, specifically, phlebology?

My early achievements, including being listed in the Golden Book of Honor at Bogomolets National Medical University, were pivotal milestones in my professional growth. They served as confirmation that my efforts and dedication to studying were yielding concrete results. This recognition gave me confidence that medicine is my true calling, where continuous improvement of knowledge and skills is essential.

I have always been interested in precision and a deep understanding of anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology. Phlebology, in particular, stood out as a field where a detailed approach to the patient is crucial. Early recognition not only motivated me to develop further but also helped define my goal: to work in an area that combines theoretical knowledge with practical skills.

Phlebology allows me not only to assist patients but also to engage in scientific research. Venous diseases can have serious health implications, and for me, it is important to implement modern approaches to help patients lead fulfilling lives.

Aesthetic phlebology is a new trend in Ukraine, and you were among the first to combine varicose vein treatment with an aesthetic approach. How does this differ from traditional phlebology?

Aesthetic phlebology is an innovative field that differs from traditional phlebology in both its concept and approach to treatment.

Traditional phlebology focuses on the medical aspects of treating venous diseases such as varicose veins, thrombophlebitis, and venous insufficiency. Its primary goal is to relieve symptoms, prevent complications, and improve the overall functionality of the circulatory system.

Aesthetic phlebology goes beyond these objectives. It integrates varicose vein treatment with attention to the appearance of the legs. Changes caused by varicose veins can significantly affect a patient’s quality of life, especially from an aesthetic perspective. In this field, we use modern minimally invasive techniques such as laser technologies, sclerotherapy, and other innovative methods. These allow us to address both medical and cosmetic issues simultaneously.

This comprehensive approach significantly improves patients’ quality of life. They experience relief from pain and discomfort while also regaining the aesthetic appearance of their legs, which is psychologically important for many people.

Some of your patients come to you after being turned away by other doctors. What gives you the confidence to take on such cases, and how do you approach solving complex medical challenges?

Each case is unique, and for me, it is essential to approach patient care with the utmost responsibility. The fact that patients come to me after being turned away by other doctors demonstrates their trust in me, which motivates me to find the best solutions for their conditions.

My confidence is based on several factors. First, I thoroughly study each case, analyzing all medical data, tests, and the patient’s medical history. Second, I rely on modern diagnostic and treatment methods, staying informed about the latest scientific advancements.

I strongly believe in the principle of an individualized approach. Treatment plans are developed based on the physiological and psychological needs of each patient. Furthermore, I work with a team of professionals, which allows me to provide the highest quality care even in the most challenging cases.

My goal is not only to improve the patient’s health but also to achieve aesthetic results that meet their expectations.

International training and conferences are invaluable opportunities to gain new knowledge and practices. One technology I adopted after my training abroad is laser vein coagulation. This method has significantly transformed my approach to treating varicose veins. Laser therapy avoids large incisions and reduces recovery time to a minimum.

Another innovative technology is VenaBLOCK, which combines high efficiency with minimal discomfort for the patient, allowing them to quickly return to normal activities.

I have also implemented advanced ultrasound scanning techniques, which enable precise diagnostics and highly effective procedures.

Varicose vein disease is becoming increasingly common. What is your approach to prevention, and what advice do you give your patients to avoid surgical intervention?

Preventing varicose vein disease is key to maintaining healthy veins. My approach includes leading an active lifestyle, maintaining a healthy weight, proper body positioning, using compression garments, balanced nutrition, and regular medical check-ups.

I always advise my patients to incorporate physical activity, monitor their diet, and avoid prolonged periods in the same position. Additionally, modern methods such as sclerotherapy and laser therapy are effective in treating the early stages of varicose veins without the need for surgery.
