American rapper and designer Kanye West has been stripped of his PhD from the Art Institute of Chicago. It is reported by NME.
The institution’s president, Eliza Tenney, said West’s anti-African-American, anti-Semitic and inflammatory statements against blacks and Jews were the reason for the annulment of the musician’s degree, and also called West’s statements disgusting and reprehensible.
“While we strongly believe in the right to express diversity of opinions and beliefs, the nature of [West’s] conduct made it clear that the revocation (…) was appropriate,” Tenney said, adding that the revocation of the doctorate came after a petition filed by students that received four thousands of signatures.
