The German Parliament (Bundestag) by a majority of votes supported the resolution recognizing the Holodomor as genocide of the Ukrainian people. MPs from the Left Party and the far-right Alternative for Germany abstained from voting. This was reported on the website of the Bundestag.
“The mass death of people from starvation [during the Holodomor] was not the result of crop failure, but was the responsibility of the political leadership of the Soviet Union under Joseph Stalin. Thus, the Holodomor is a crime against humanity,” the text of the resolution says.
It also says that the Bundestag shares the historical and political classification of the Holodomor as genocide.
“In absolute terms, Ukrainians suffered the most from the famine provoked by the Soviet leadership. <…> Nevertheless, at that time, as a result of a politically induced famine, millions of people died in other regions of the Soviet Union, ”the resolution says.
The Bundestag deputies called on the German government to continue to support the memory of the victims of the Holodomor, counteract attempts to promote “one-sided Russian historical narratives”, and continue to provide political, financial, humanitarian and military support to Ukraine.
