US Senators Blame Tesla for Misleading Autopilot Ads

US Democratic Senators Richard Blumenthal and Edward Markey have called on the US Federal Trade Commission to investigate Tesla, founded by Elon Musk.

Amid a string of accidents involving Tesla’s electric vehicles, senators have “raised serious concerns” over the “misleading advertising and marketing” used by the company to promote its Autopilot and Full-Self Driving features. Tesla, they said, “has repeatedly exaggerated the capabilities of its cars, and these statements pose an increasing threat to drivers and other road users.”

“There are no fully self-driving cars on the market now,” the senators said. They pointed out the limitations that Tesla electric cars have. “Understanding these limitations is necessary because when the driver’s expectations exceed the capabilities of the vehicle, it can and does result in serious and fatal accidents,” the message said.
