The outbreak of COVID-19 in China through the eyes of the eyewitness

While the coronavirus in Ukraine is only gaining momentum, in China, the epicenter of its origin and spread, the epidemic has come to naught.

We talked to the Ukrainian Anatolii Maksymov, who was in Asia during the Chinese New Year celebration.

Anatolii Maksymov is an entrepreneur, founder of 4YOUGLOBAL.

Well, Anatolii, tell us how did the coronavirus epidemic in Asia begin? Where were you at the time of the outbreak?

Every six months I visit Asia for work. That time, it was another planned trip before the Chinese New Year. No one suspected anything.

I flew to Nha Trang in Vietnam before the New Year at the end of December just to live and relax. At this time, all Asians travel a lot, fly around the islands to visit relatives and friends, some go to Malaysia, some – to Thailand. I don’t watch TV at all, and on the Internet, at first, there were no videos about the outbreak of an epidemic in Chinese Wuhan. Later, in Vietnam, they started saying that tourists brought coronavirus to the country. I spoke to some Ukrainian tourists and besides, many of my friends, partners, and even my sister live in China. Therefore, I know about the situation in Tianxia firsthand.

How did people react to the emergence of the new virus in Vietnam?

I learned about the severity of the epidemic when I traveled through Vietnam, and it was only by the reaction of people. The population began to panic, to buy up food. However, it is far from the panic we can observe in Ukraine. In Vietnam, in China, people still support each other more.

When the quarantine was introduced in China, and other Asian countries on January 2, people took it seriously at once. Everyone wore masks, the police started checking the temperature of passers-by, in shops, and airports. Yes, at first there was a shortage with masks, as elsewhere in the world. Therefore, I was often asked if I had any of the Ukrainian suppliers to bring masks to China. The Chinese government decided to meet the people’s needs and started buying masks from different suppliers, at least triple the price. Providing the population with masks and antiseptics was a priority. Production has stopped, strict quarantine has been declared in the country, many shops have stopped working.

In general, Asians, unlike other nations, were more fortunate if, of course, I can say so. They were lucky, because many people have been saving money for the Chinese New Year for the whole year, and the total closure of enterprises was not crucial for people, many went to quarantine with a decent amount of money, and were able to provide themselves with products for its entire period.

Why didn’t you leave the country, when you realized that the new disease started getting more serious?

I doubted long, whether fly away or not. Then we were told that everything was OK, they said, the situation was under control. Besides, everyone agreed that the airport was one of the most dangerous places, where you could get the coronavirus. Due to check-in and flight cancellations, numerous people gathered at airports, and that was a territory with a high risk of infection.

In the beginning, prices for hotel rooms and air tickets soared. Because of the great excitement, it was difficult to fly away, one had to travel with transfers, flights were canceled, and many lost their tickets. I had one ticket “wasted” as well.

I, like everyone else, adhered to quarantine. Almost no one used cash, everyone paid with cards. Delivery services brought food, the streets were sanitized. Of course, I wanted to fly away, it was boring to stay home.

China has already coped with the virus. In your opinion, why is it so?

Yes, China has overcome the coronavirus, mainly due to the responsible approach to the quarantine precautions. There, people themselves cared about each other. It’s not even the police, who checked everyone’s temperature. For example, if someone went outside without a mask, then ordinary passersby immediately remarked to this person, and could even share a mask with him.

When they started telling on the Internet and television about deaths from the coronavirus, people took the information with a great deal of responsibility at once and isolated themselves, so as not to expose themselves and their neighbors to impending danger.

In Vietnam, I lived with an elderly family in their small home-like hotel. The aged owner advised me to wash not only my hands with soap 40 times a day but also wash the nasal cavity with soap. Thanks to him for this piece of advice. I decided to follow it and repeated this procedure several times daily.

Where were the people with the suspect of coronavirus placed? Were there enough places in hospitals?

When it was necessary to move around cities or fly to a neighboring country, the main fear was simply to catch a common cold, flu or SARS. The temperature was measured at the checkpoints, and all those, who did not meet the norm were removed from the flights to the quarantine for 14 days until the diagnosis was confirmed or denied.

There was another moment. If there were no indications for hospitalization yet, but the suspect for coronavirus was declared, the person was sent not to the hospital to all infected people, but self-isolation at home. A person with suspicion, while his tests were being checked, installed the application on his smartphone, and the police knew about his movements if, for example, he decided to break the isolation rules and go to the store.

Do you know how the used masks were utilized?

I like to take a walk in the mornings when the city sleeps, and it’s quiet. In the evening, everyone took out packages with used masks, and when I left home in the morning, the cleaning services had already managed to take them away. Unfortunately, I don’t know where they got further, but I have never seen that the used masks were lying in the street or just in a garbage can without a pack.

Your wishes to Ukrainians and the whole world in this difficult time.

I want Ukrainians to take the COVID-19 epidemic seriously. If they say no more than 10 people in the transport, then this condition must be observed. If you are asked to wear masks and not to gather in groups of more than 3 people, then you need to obey and do so. You are asked to stay home for quarantine, then limit your moves to the maximum.

Only strict adherence to instructions during the epidemic will help to minimize the number of people infected. China and other Asian countries are an indicator of how in a fairly short time you can survive a terrible epidemic and bring it to naught. Stay home, wash your hands and nose with soap, eat vitamins, improve your immunity, and then the pandemic will not affect you or your loved ones.
